OrthoAccel® Technologies, Inc., developers of the AcceleDent™ System, which is an acceleration device to reduce orthodontic treatment time, recently received positive feedback from Dr. Sharon Orton-Gibbs of Walpole Specialists in Surbiton, United Kingdom. Dr. Orton-Gibbs is one of the first evaluation sites in the world to include AcceleDent in her orthodontic treatment plan. Dr. Orton-Gibbs has fitted 65 patients with AcceleDent and to date 9 patients have completed treatment – all significantly faster than expected.
According to Dr. Orton-Gibbs, 8 patients completed their orthodontic treatment on average 46% faster than expected (range 29% to 60%). The 9th patient, who commenced using AcceleDent after orthodontic treatment was underway, finished 16% faster than expected.
AcceleDent™ is a removable appliance, similar to a mouth guard into which the patient bites, and represents the first non-surgical approach to modulate local bone biology and accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. Rather than using only the constant pressure applied by traditional braces, AcceleDent applies low frequency pulsation to the teeth. The patient uses the appliance once daily, for twenty minutes. Patients are able to carry out most routine daily tasks during the twenty minute activation period. Most importantly, AcceleDent is designed to work in conjunction with orthodontic appliances such as brackets and aligners to facilitate tooth movement.
OrthoAccel® recently completed a pivotal clinical trial in the United States whereby daily use of AcceleDent safely increased the rate of tooth movement by 38 – 50% without increasing the risk of root resorption. The personal experience of Dr. Orton-Gibbs is very consistent with the results of the randomized clinical trial and these results will be presented by Dr. Orton-Gibbs at the upcoming British Orthodontic Congress September 24, 2011 in Harrogate.

About the AcceleDent™ System
AcceleDent represents the first clinical approach to safely accelerate orthodontic tooth movement via modulating biology. The device has been studied clinically and applies gentle pulsing forces in combination with standard orthodontics to move teeth faster through accelerated bone remodeling. Importantly, the device works complementary with all existing orthodontic technologies. AcceleDent is neither FDA cleared nor FDA approved; it is currently investigational only in the United States.
